Chance meeting with coach led Edison's Rangel into diving
It was during a chance meeting two years ago that Edison High School senior Christian Rangel discovered the sport of diving. Rangel will compete in his second and final UIL Swimming and Diving State Meet on Saturday at Josh Davis Natatorium. He competed in last year’s state meet in Austin, cracking the top 10 by finishing ninth among 22 divers in the competition. Since Saturday’s state meet will be his last as a high school athlete, Rangel is aiming for a top three finish. Rangel kept his promise, winning his first district and regional titles as a junior and qualifying for the state meet.

SAN ANTONIO – Three years ago, as a sophomore at Edison High School, Christian Rangel started diving on a whim. Put simply, Rangel has transformed himself into one of the best high school divers in Texas. “I did have a lot of anxiety when I first started diving because I was scared I’d get hurt. Then and now, Rangel has always been proud to represent both Edison and SAISD at high school diving’s highest level. When he finishes his high school career this weekend and officially graduates this spring, that is precisely the legacy he wants to leave behind.
