An external review of Minnesota’s response to days of civil unrest following the May 2020 killing of George Floyd found several problems, including a lack of clear leadership early on as businesses were being destroyed and set ablaze.

AdPublic Safety Commissioner John Harrington said the state is coordinating with the FBI and the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force, in addition to more than 200 chief law enforcement officers across the state, to prepare for next month's trial. Harrington said the proposed fund would help reimburse law enforcement agencies from other parts of Minnesota, which he said are willing to send personnel but concerned about the extra costs. The House public safety committee approved the proposal Tuesday, with an additional provision requiring law enforcement agencies to follow a model policy created by the state's police licensing board for responding to protests.

The police officer who held down George Floyd by his neck, resulting in his death earlier this week, has been arrested and charged with murder. Following Floyd's death, Chauvin and three other officers involved were fired earlier this week for their roles in the incident, CBS News reports. The arrest comes after protests broke out in the city, as well as across the nation, as a result of Floyd's death. Taraji P. Henson even got visibly emotional during an interview with CNN while talking about mental health amid the coronavirus pandemic and Floyd's death.
