GLO hands house keys to Weslaco man whose home was destroyed by 2018 floods

At one point, rain gauges at the Weslaco airport recorded more than 11 inches of rainfall in just three hours. Meanwhile a dozen or more inches inundated Mercedes, Mission, Edinburg and the Delta towns of Edcouch, Elsa and Monte Alto. As Martinez began the arduous process of rebuilding, he heard about the GLO’s disaster recovery program, the Homeowner Assistance and Reimbursement Programs, or HARP. Congress approved more than $137 million in disaster recovery aid for South Texas counties affected by the 2018 and 2019 summer storms, as well as by Tropical Storm Imelda. “We fully demolished it,” said Heather Lagrone, senior deputy director for the GLO’s disaster recovery office.

More than a mascot — how the Ranger name echoes a racist past

“Names of us, even names of individuals, names of places, names of a mascot — names have a history,” Hernandez said in a June 25 phone interview. To understand the debate around the mascot, one must understand the history associated with the Texas Rangers. “There’s plenty of evidence that can help us make the case to not name mascots or teams after the Rangers,” Hernandez said. The report continues with the commission’s findings, which were that the union organizers had found physical and verbal harassment by the Texas Rangers. With that history in mind, the term “Ranger” echoes injustices of the past that have survived in the system.
