(Carl Recine/Pool Photo via AP)LIVERPOOL – In his most challenging period as Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp put on a show of defiance Monday in outlining how he plans to turn his side's stuttering season around. Liverpool is on a run of only two wins in 10 matches and has lost three straight league games for the first time since Klopp arrived in 2015. Liverpool fans hung a banner on the gates outside Anfield on Sunday, with the message: “Jurgen Klopp YNWA” — shorthand for the club's motto, “You'll Never Walk Alone.”AdHe said he appreciated the gesture but was not in need of any “special support.”“I don’t need a break,” Klopp said, dismissing speculation he was contemplating quitting Liverpool. “I can split things, I can switch off, one thing and the other thing, I don’t carry things around,” he added.

(John Walton/Pool via AP)LONDON – Liverpool looks set to address its injury crisis in central defense by making a low-key signing from England’s second division on the final day of the January transfer window. AdHenderson played alongside youngster Nathaniel Phillips in the 3-1 win at West Ham on Sunday, for the 12th different center-back partnership in 21 Premier League games this season. In a turbulent title defence, Liverpool are third in the league, four points behind first-place Manchester City, after playing one more game. Compare that to 2018, when teams splashed out a total of 420 million pounds ($575 million) in January and even last year, when 230 million pounds ($315 million) was spent in the winter window.

(Lindsey Parnaby/ Pool via AP)Over the next seven days, Manchester United can reach a cup final and climb to the top of the Premier League — all at the expense of its two biggest rivals, Manchester City and Liverpool. First up is a meeting with Man City in the League Cup semifinals, a repeat of last season but this time being played over only one leg because of the condensed, coronavirus-impacted season. “I hear now,” Klopp said, “that Manchester United had more penalties in two years than I had in five-and-a-half years (at Liverpool). The Norwegian coach said there have been no lingering effects of the losses in the semifinals last season — in the League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League.

After 4-week break, English football swings back into action
(AP Photo/Matthias Schrader)The new English soccer season is starting in the same month the last one finished. Instead, it is a four-week preseason for the English champions that is still getting interrupted by an international break for Nations League qualifiers. I'll be very surprised if this is the best game we'll play this season, Klopp said. The sight of Jordan Henderson lifting silverware, with his now-trademark stuttering steps, alongside his jubilant Liverpool teammates is something English soccer fans are getting used to. It was Aubameyang, after all, who scored the goals in the FA Cup final that means Arsenal is back at Wembley this weekend.
