SAN ANTONIO – A U.S. congressmen that represent parts of San Antonio is expected to discuss his visit with Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez on Wednesday. Pérez was shot by a federal immigration officer last weekend and is detained in a detention facility.

A news release said U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (TX-35) is scheduled to speak at 4:30 p.m. in San Antonio. He visited Pérez with fellow congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20).
On Monday, Casar called for Pérez’s release from a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing center in Pearsall. The congressman said Pérez was shot, taken to a hospital and released with a bullet still lodged in his back.

On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security released a statement titled “Correct the Record,” that push back on claims related to the shooting.
DHS said ICE did not refuse to remove the bullet, Pérez did not have a valid work permit and that he is not in the country legally. The department also said he is receiving pain medication.
Pérez was able to describe his current condition to reporters over the phone while he was detained in Pearsall during a news conference on Monday. He said he was not feeling well.
On Tuesday, he was taken back to a hospital, and Castro said the Venezuelan man could not move the left side of his body. However, later that day Pérez was brought back to Pearsall with the bullet still in his back — days after the shooting.
