'Nomadland,' 'Borat' win at a socially distant Golden Globes

She’s only the second woman in the history of the Globes to win, and the first since Barbra Streisand won for “Yentl” in 1984. Its star, guerilla comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, also won best actor in a comedy. “The Queen's Gambit” won best limited series, and best actress in the category for Anya Taylor-Joy. “Schitt's Creek,” the Pop TV series that found a wider audience on Netflix, won best comedy series for its final season. Catherine O'Hara also took best actress in a comedy series.

Phoenix, Erivo and ‘Barb and Star’ among Globes presenters

This combination photo shows, from left, Awkwafina, Cynthia Erivo, Joaquin Phoenix, Kristen Wiig and Renee Zellweger, who are among the first presenters announced for the Golden Globes awards ceremony. (AP Photo)LOS ANGELES – “Barb and Star” are headed to the Golden Globes — actors Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo will be among the presenters at the upcoming ceremony. Wiig and Mumolo's latest film, “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” was released last week and some are already calling the campy film a cult classic. She’s won Golden Globes for her acting “Klute,” “Julia” and “Coming Home.”Norman Lear will be honored with the Carol Burnett Award, a counterpart to the DeMille Award that focuses on life achievement in television. Netflix dominated the nominations earlier this month, with its film “Mank” and its television series “The Crown” the leading nominees.

‘Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar’ is the weirdest and funniest movie you’ll see all year

Mumolo and Wiig star as Barb and Star, respectively, two Midwestern BFFs tired of their boring lives -- and decide to have the vacation of their dreams in Vista Del Mar, Florida. Barb and Star meet a devilishly handsome man (played by the film’s breakout star, Jamie Dornan) who is there to help his boss kill everyone in Vista Del Mar, and of course, Barb and Star unknowingly get caught up in his plan, and must end up saving the day. There’s no other way to put it, but “Barb and Star” is a silly and dumb movie in the best way possible. Nothing makes sense, but in the world that Wiig and Mumolo have built for Barb and Star, it just works. What really makes “Barb and Star” soar is Barb and Star themselves.

MOVIES— Travel may seem closed off right now but how about a cruise with Meryl Streep, Dianne Wiest and Candice Bergen? — If one Streep film wasn’t enough for you, she’s again in typically fine form in “The Prom,” parodying a diva actor in Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of the 2018 Broadway musical. — AP Film Writer Jake CoyleMUSIC— Jon Bon Jovi has already produced an album this year with “2020” and the concert film "On a Night Like This — Bon Jovi 2020." — AP Entertainment Writer Mark KennedyTELEVISION— This season’s winner for lengthy title: “High School Musical: The Musical: The Holiday Special,” debuting Friday on Disney +. — The CW’s “iHeartRadio Jingle Ball 2020,” a 90-minute special based on the annual concert, will air at 8 p.m. EST Monday, Dec. 14.

Backstage at the Oscars: Dazed winners and sweet reunions

Diane Keaton, left, and Keanu Reeves appear on stage at the Oscars on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Martin paced back and forth in the wings and stopped a few times to check his lapel and bow tie in the mirror. Later Corden ran into Rudolph and Wiig again, this time in his full “Cats” regalia alongside Rebel Wilson. MAKING PLANSYou never know who you’re going to run into backstage at the Oscars, or who you’re going to see making plans, Iike Chris Rock and Timothée Chalamet or Rami Malek and Oscar Isaac. In the wings they shared a sweet moment: Reeves offered Keaton his arm and the two walked into position linked.

Hanks, Fonda and more stars amuse at Oscars rehearsals

(AP Photo/John Locher)LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell are standing on the Oscars stage performing some hilarious material for a few dozen people who are in stitches watching the two comedians. Louis-Dreyfus and Ferrell are just a few of the stars who circulated in and out of the Dolby Theatre to rehearse Saturday, including Tom Hanks, Salma Hayek, Jane Fonda and Mahershala Ali. But the stars weren’t always confined to the stage, especially if they arrived a little early. Makeup artists Antonio Rael has been standing in for big stars for 34 years. Rael was talking about the stand-ins but that doesn’t mean some of the stars aren’t anxious as well.

Retail earnings, Fed minutes, impeachment hearings: 3 things to watch for Wednesday

Target, Lowe's earnings on deckRetail earnings are kicking into high gear with Target and Lowe's reporting on Wednesday morning. Kohl's quarterly earnings and sales missed estimates due to an "increasingly competitive promotional environment" and the retailer also slashed its profit outlook for the year. Its quarterly sales fell short of expectations while earnings beat. The consensus for Lowe's quarterly earnings is $1.35 per share, compared to an EPS of $1.04 in the third quarter of 2018, according to FactSet. Investors will look to the minutes for clues about how divided the Fed is on its policy.
