Or Chloรฉ Zhao, making history as the first woman of Asian descent to win best director (and the first woman since 1984.) AdOf course, there were the usual confounding results and baffling snubs, compounded here by some epic Zoom fails. ZHAO MAKES HISTORYWhen Zhao won best director for her haunting and elegant โNomadland,โ she was the first woman of Asian descent to win that award. It was updated on March 3, 2021, to correct the nationality of director of โNomadland.โ Chloe Zhao is Chinese, not Asian American.

'Ma Rainey,' 'Minari' and Boseman lead SAG nominations
The Screen Actors Guild has nominated the cast for a SAG Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. But the SAG Awards, presented by SAG-AFTRA, are considered a far better barometer for the Academy Awards, where actors account for the largest percentage of the academy. Usually, the eventual Oscar best picture winner is first nominated for best ensemble by the SAG Awards, though โGreen Bookโ and โThe Shape of Water" were two recent exceptions. In 2019, he memorably a ccepted the SAG ensemble award for โBlack Panther." The University of Pittsburgh acquires August Wilson trove
NEW YORK โ The University of Pittsburgh has acquired the archive of the late playwright and Pittsburgh native son August Wilson, a trove that contains recordings, letters, artwork, poetry, unpublished work and notebooks. The August Wilson Archive will reside in a state-of-the-art home in Hillman Libraryโs renovated Archives & Special Collections, the university said Thursday. โThis acquisition is about more than bringing August Wilson back home to Pittsburgh,โ said Chancellor Patrick Gallagher in a statement. Next up this December is โMa Raineyโs Black Bottom,โ directed by Tony-winner George C. Wolfe and adapted by Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Washington says โThe Piano Lessonโ is the next Wilson work he hopes to bring to the screen.

Boseman plays Levee, an ambitious trumpeter aiming to launch himself with his own updated versions of Ma Rainey's songs. โMa Raineyโs Black Bottomโ was the first play Wilson wrote in 1984, and the only one of this 10-part Century Cycle not set in Pittsburgh.

'Vanity Fair' cover shot by Black photographer for 1st time
The new issue of Vanity Fair featuring a powerful image of Oscar-winning actor Viola Davis marks the first time the publication has featured the work of a Black photographer on its cover. The historic image of Davis, shot by photographer Dario Calmese, shows the 54-year-old in profile, her back facing the camera. Davis is wearing a glue gown with a deep plunge in the back, hand on hip. The publication has had a problem in the past with putting Black women on the covers, Davis says in an interview for the magazine. This image (of Davis) reclaims that narrative, transmuting the white gaze on Black suffering into the Black gaze of grace, elegance and beauty.In her Vanity Fair interview, Davis discusses the recent racial justice protests, her upcoming role as Michelle Obama, her impoverished upbringing in Rhode Island, and the challenges of being a Black woman in Hollywood, among other topics.

Frankly, this is one of those shows that shouldn't have dragged on this long, demonstrating that you can only get away with a concept like "Murder" for so long. That culminated in Annalise's murder trial, which played out in the final episode after a teased shooting on the courthouse steps and glimpse of Annalise's funeral, leaving the implication that she had met an untimely and violent end. That said, the finale wasn't entirely unredeemed, thanks to the showcase it provided Davis.
