Why are the so many flies right now?

Those extra flies you've been noticing outside? They might actually be intentional. The USDA has released nearly 400 million sterile flies across Texas since January in an effort to combat the New World screwworm outbreak — a flesh-eating parasite that can infest open wounds on animals and, in rare cases, people.
