DWI suspect crashes into flower shop

Shop owner injured in North side flower shop accident

SAN ANTONIO –  A woman suspected of driving while intoxicated drives right into a Northside flower shop Wednesday morning.

According police, the small black SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed in reverse when it plowed through the glass wall of the San Antonio Flower Company.

"To do the damage that's been done and be parked the way the car is inside the store, she had to be going pretty fast," said store employee Jaime Hallam.

Hallam pulled up to the West Avenue store just minutes after the accident to see a lot full of emergency vehicles.

Store owner Leticia Chavez was called to the scene by two of her employees who had come by to pick up flowers.

Chavez was walking out with them with an armful of flowers when the vehicle broke through the glass wall at the front of the store.

"When they were going out, Tommy had some boxes, and my employee had time to jump because she saw the car coming but Tommy was not able to see and he was hit," Chavez said.

The owner was airlifted to University hospital in critical condition. A store employee was taken by ambulance.

The driver of the SUV left the scene with only a few scrapes, but is now facing possible charges after being arrested at the scene.
