Christmas tree prices up slightly

Fresh trees growing in popularity

SAN ANTONIO – If you're planning to deck your halls with a fresh Christmas tree, it may cost you more green, depending on where you buy.

At the Holiday Hills tent on Interstate 10 West near De Zavala Road,  the price of a six-and-a-half-foot Noble Fir was $71, four dollars more than last year.

That's exactly what Ashley Fontanez' 'family picked out and had strapped to the top of their car. Like a growing number of people they say no to faux and prefer a live tree.

"We love a live Christmas tree, " she said. "We want to walk into the house and smell the scent of that tree."

Jeraldine Bush, who's traveled to San Antonio in her RV for 17 years to peddle Christmas cheer and live trees under the test, said more and more people are going back to traditional live trees.

"We're having quite a few people come in and say, ‘This is the first real tree in 20 years'," she said.

While she sells the newer Nordman tree, the citrus-smelling Grand fir and the traditional Douglas fir, the Noble remains the most popular, according to Bush.

The trees are shipped in from Oregon and run the gamut.

A four-and-a-half foot Norman cost $50. A Noble stretching 13 feet tall required a lot more jingle: $700.
