SEGUIN, Texas – Seguin police have identified Dominique Singleton, 30, as the woman who was killed while attempting to cross Interstate 10 in Guadalupe County on Monday night.
Singleton was struck by a pickup in the westbound lanes of traffic near mile marker 609 around 11:15 p.m.
"She chose to cross, or to attempt to cross, IH-10 in order to get to some neighborhoods on the other side," said Sgt. Aaron Seidenberger, with the Seguin Police Department. "A (driver in a) vehicle coming down the overpass did not see her and then struck her."
Seidenberger said the area where Singleton was hit is a short distance from the Guadalupe County Jail. The stretch of highway has no lights, and includes an incline that can create a blind spot for drivers, he said.
"Because there's a rise, if you look, you don't see vehicles for a long ways. You don't see them on top of the overpass," said Seidenberger. "Likewise, the driver, he didn't see her until it was too late."
Seidenberger said heavy fog added to the lack of visibility. Police do not plan to pursue charges against the driver who hit her.
"He was distraught. He was very upset," Seidenberger said.
Singleton had just been released from custody at the jail when she was hit.
Records show she was arrested on Sunday for an outstanding theft warrant, as well as charges including marijuana possession and failing to identify herself as a fugitive.
She leaves behind four children, Seidenberger said.
