Community comes together for pregnant woman killed in South Side crash

Elizabeth Cano, 36, killed in crash with suspected drunken driver

SAN ANTONIO – The family and friends of Elizabeth Cano, 36, came together Saturday to hold a BBQ plate sale to help pay for her funeral expenses.

"It's just been awesome. There's been so many people from all walks of life, I mean there was a couple that came all the way from New Braunfels because they said we heard your story and we just wanted to come down and give our condolences. My other sister and I are just so overwhelmed with emotion," said Cano's sister, Stephanie Longoria.

Cano was pregnant and with her husband and daughter when she died. Their vehicle was struck by a suspected drunken driver.

"My sister, her husband and my niece were on their way home from picking up my niece from my other sisters. They were having a date night and they were driving home and they were hit head on by a suspected drunk driver," said Longoria.

Cano's husband, John, suffered critical injuries including a break to his leg that may require amputation. The couple's 1-year-old child suffered only minor injuries.

There's only no words that can be used to describe this, it's been really really hard," said Cano's sister, Victoria Longoria.

The Longoria family says they'll continue to lean on each for strength, healing day by day just as their sister would have wanted.

"Next is just to keep on fighting. That's the way Liz was, she was a fighter, she has always been a fighter. She wouldn't want us to sit and dwell," said Stephanie Longoria.
