Boerne man captures dramatic video of SUV in raging waters

BOERNE, Texas – The video of an SUV being swept away in Boerne Saturday has gone viral.

KSAT 12 has learned that the driver of the vehicle got out safely.

George Kawli captured the video on his cellphone and said at the time he did not know if anyone was in the vehicle.

"You kind of feel helpless because you want to help a human being," said Kawli. "But you know you just saw a car get tossed, a Jeep, and you know as soon as you put your foot in the water, you're going to be swept away."

Kawli said it happened over a bridge where he and several other drivers needed to cross to get home, but looking at the raging waters, he chose not to cross.

"I knew there was no way I could cross," said Kawli. "And I was trying to talk people on this side into not crossing over because they were wanting to cross."

However, the driver of the white Jeep in the video took a chance and his vehicle got swept away.

Kawli said he called 911 first and then started capturing video of the SUV getting caught up at one point and eventually flipping over.

"The biggest fear (was) if there were any kids in the car buckled into a child seat," said Kawli.

Kawli later learned that no one was in the vehicle.

Kawli said his top concern was his own 6-year-old daughter, who was with him at the time. He said that is why he opted for a longer but safer way home.

"To risk your life for 30 minutes -- you don't want to mess with Mother Nature when she's angry and she was really angry that day," said Kawli.
