Detective Mike Villarreal killed in head-on crash while on duty

SAN ANTONIO – A medical examiner's report found that a Pearsall police detective had methamphetamines in his system at the time of an April 12 car accident that claimed his life.

Detective Mike Villarreal was transporting a juvenile offender to a detention facility when he crashed head-on with another vehicle on Highway 90.

The two others involved in the accident were both seriously hurt.

Villarreal died at the scene of the accident.

A toxicology report also shows Villarreal had naproxen, an anti-inflammatory pain medicine in his system at the time of the accident.

The Pearsall Police Department is working to provide counseling for its officers.

The department has also requested the city implement random drug testing.
