SAN ANTONIO – A 34-year-old man was shot and killed in an apparent home invasion Friday morning on the city's West Side, police said.
Police identified the man as Julio Gutierrez.
Police said Gutierrez woke up at 5:30 a.m. to see why a dog was barking and saw two men in dark-colored clothing.
Evidence at the scene suggests the men then forced their way into the home in the 100 block of Esmeralda, police said. Moments later, Gutierrez's wife found him dead at the door, police said.
Gutierrez's wife and four children were also in the home but were not injured.
A neighbor said she heard at least four gunshots and then saw a small black vehicle leave the scene with its lights off.
"You always hear gunshots somewhere up (and) down the creek," neighbor Robert Rivera said.
Neighbors said while there is occasional violence in the area, it's unsettling to see it so close to home.
"I don't feel like I'm afraid or anything. I fear for my sisters," Rivera said.
Most of the people on the block said they did not know Gutierrez or his family and said they only recently moved into the home.
