SAN ANTONIO – Gov. Greg Abbott visited San Antonio to award a Korean war veteran the Lone Star Medal of Valor.
Abbott awarded the medal to retired Marine Sgt. Werner W. Reininger at Fort Sam Houston Golf Club, citing his extraordinary heroism as a corporal in the Korean War in 1950.
"It is my distinct honor on behalf of the people of Texas to present the Lone Star Medal of Valor to Sgt. Ronnie Reininger," Abbott said. "Sgt. Reininger displayed selfless service, leadership and dedication to duty above and beyond. His repeated acts of valor inspired others to fight on and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and military forces of Texas."
Confronted by overwhelming enemy forces in North Korea, Reininger had already been wounded and suffering from frostbite when he re-directed his machine gun section, firing over the heads of his fellow Marines to repulse the onslaught.
Drawn to his position, Chinese mortar fire cost him one of his legs and severely injured the other.
His repeated actions at tremendous personal risk that day now have earned him the prestigious award.
