Chief William McManus said police were called to the 5600 block of Old Highway 90 on the city’s West Side around 2:15 p.m. after a woman reported a man had stolen her car.

The officers said when they arrived the suspect got out of the car and ran away from them.

During the course of the chase the suspect turned toward the officer, shooting at him several times.

Police returned fire, hitting the suspect at least one time.

The officer, a four-year veteran of SAPD, is now on paid administrative duty.

No one else was injured. At the time of this report, the SAPD Shooting Team is conducting an investigation.
