SA city staff makes recommendation to annex two large Bexar County areas

Annexation process in one area could be done by 2020

SAN ANTONIO – The city of San Antonio is making plans for a bigger city. City staff on Wednesday made recommendations to annex two large areas in Bexar County.

One of the recommendations is to annex the Interstate 10 West area, north of Loop 1604 and south of Fair Oaks Ranch.

"That requires by state law that we develop a service plan," said Peter Zanoni, deputy city manager.

"What type of services could we provide? We'd have to hold some public hearings as well and help educate the community,” Zanoni said.

Zanoni said the annexation process should take three years and that it may be complete by December 2019 or January 2020.

A resident named Erica who lives in that I-10 West area said she is happy not being a part of the big city.

"The city of San Antonio cannot do anything for us with what we already have," said Erica. "We're on wells and septics and if we go with city water, we have to pay for it ourselves."

City staff also recommended to annex the businesses along the Highway 281 corridor, north of 1604, within the next few months.

However, the city would make a deal with residents in that area to not annex them until 2034.
