Val Verde County sheriff's deputy Demetrio Martinez charged with DWI

DEL RIO, Texas – A Val Verde County Sheriff's Office deputy was fired Wednesday, days after authorities said he was involved in an off-duty drunken-driving crash in his patrol vehicle.

Demetrio Martinez faces a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated, Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez said.

Demetrio Martinez was involved in a single-vehicle wreck early Sunday near Main and Second streets in Del Rio, sheriff Martinez said.

The sheriff said Demetrio Martinez was two months shy of working two years for the sheriff's office and served in a patrol capacity.

The sheriff said in a phone interview with KSAT 12 News that this type of behavior will not be tolerated in his office.

Additional details about the wreck were not released.
