1 dead, 3 injured after 4 big rigs involved in collision in Frio County

Traffic being diverted for extended period of time

FRIO COUNTY, Texas – One person is dead and three were hospitalized after four big rigs were involved in a rear-end crash, Texas Department of Public Safety officials said.

Department of Public Safety troopers responded to the collision on Interstate 35 near mile marker 98 in Frio County about 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

One driver was pronounced dead at the crash scene. The other three big rig drivers were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Northbound I-35 in the area will remain shut down for an extended period of time. Officials said northbound traffic is being diverted at exit 91 and being rerouted to Highway 1583 onto the I-35 access road.

DPS Lt. Jason Reyes said it appeared debris on the road may have caused the crash.

"It appears that there was some debris in the roadway, and as a result of the debris in the roadway, traffic started to slow down. At some point, one of the tractors that was involved failed to slow its speed and, basically, rear-ended three other truck tractors."

Reyes said the names of the victims will not be released until family members are notified.
