La Vernia business helps care for animals of Texas church shooting victims

It started as fundraiser for Holcomb family's farm animals

LA VERNIA, Texas – A La Vernia business is helping care for the animals of the victims of the Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church shooting.

It started as a fundraiser for the Holcomb family's farm animals. It's now grown to include the animals of all other families affected.

The La Vernia Country Store manager said the phone's been ringing off the hook.

The city of La Vernia and others have donated hay bales. About 4,000 pounds of feed have already been donated.

"I'm in awe of the outpouring of people wanting to help, I didn't think was going to be a problem," store manager Wayne Dieter said. "People in rural-urban areas, whether it's a natural disaster, hurricane or tornado, people want to step up to help."

People can purchase gift cards from the store. The cards will be used to purchase animal feed for the families for as long as the money lasts.
