Kendall County deputy fatally struck by passing driver during traffic stop, sheriff says

KENDALL COUNTY, Texas – A Kendall County Sheriff's Office deputy was fatally struck during a traffic stop Tuesday morning, Sheriff Al Auxier said in a news conference.

Deputy Carlos Ramirez and his partner conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 10 near mile marker 533 and during the traffic stop, a passing driver struck and killed Ramirez, Auxier said. Ramirez's partner was also injured in the collision but has since been released from the hospital, officials said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Sky 12 flew over the crash site and saw a silver vehicle with no driver's side door. Auxier said DPS was still actively gathering information about the crash and could not elaborate on how the crash occurred. It's unclear if the driver who struck Ramirez will face charges.

Ramirez leaves behind a wife and two young children, according to Auxier.

"I want (Ramirez's) wife to know, and his family, that we are here for them, and we'll help them endure this tragedy we are experiencing here today," an emotional Auxier said during the news conference.

Ramirez had been with the Kendall County Sheriff's Office since 2016. Auxier said Ramirez was also a military reservist and returned in April from a deployment to Africa.
