Burnt vehicles removed from streets of Mexico following arrest of El Chapo’s son

Extradition to the U.S. isn’t guaranteed for Ovidio Guzmán

The son of infamous former Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was arrested in Mexico Thursday.

Alleged drug trafficker Ovidio Guzmán, 32, was captured amid an outbreak of violence that included blockades of various routes in Culiacan, Mexico, and vehicles being set on fire.

Video shared by Mexican authorities (watch above) shows some of the charred remains of vehicles being taken away after the mayhem.

Many schools and private businesses were closed after the Culiacan municipal government issued a warning for residents to stay home.

Nineteen suspected gang members and 10 military personnel were killed during Thursday’s unrest, according to Reuters.

Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval said in a press conference Friday that 21 people were arrested in addition to Guzmán.

Extradition to the U.S. isn’t guaranteed for Guzmán who was indicted in 2018 on drug trafficking charges.

The State Department announced a $5 million reward for information in 2021 if it led to Guzmán’s arrest and conviction.

According to Reuters, the State Department also said information indicated Guzmán had ordered multiple murders, including that of a popular Mexican singer who had refused to perform at his wedding.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration considers the Sinaloa Cartel, along with one other gang, to be responsible for most of the fentanyl inside the U.S., Reuters reported.
