It's a boy: SA Zoo welcomes not-so-baby 'baby' hippo

Hippo descendent of other animals at facility

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Zoo has welcomed a hippopotamus to its ranks.

The facility added the yet-to-be named 2-year-old after the death of Tumbo, a much beloved hippo, that died earlier this year.

The 1,200-pound addition is the grandson of Tumbo and came from the ABQ BioPark Zoo in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In the wild, the hippo population has been dwindling globally and the zoo hopes to educate guests of conservation efforts to save this species.

“At this time, he is doing great and we couldn’t be happier to welcome him to our family and ultimately introduce him to his grandmother, Uma,” said Alan Kardon, vice president of Animal Care at San Antonio Zoo.

The new addition is adjusting to his new surroundings, care staff and will meet his grandmother in the coming weeks, the zoo said.
