Potholes remain a ‘menace’ to San Antonio drivers, but here’s what you can do

6th annual Pothole Blitz is when Pothole Patrol crews expand their presence, mission

SAN ANTONIO – The 6th annual Pothole Blitz kicked off at the Public Theater of San Antonio on Monday morning. The event sees 16 Pothole Patrol crews expand their presence and work longer hours each April.

Their goal is to repair over 8,000 potholes throughout the month.

According to the Public Works Department, hundreds of potholes are repaired each day, however, they believe many more are not being reported.

Paul Barry, a spokesman for the Public Works Department, told KSAT last October that the number of pothole repairs went down from the previous year. He said that was due to the pandemic and winter freeze.

Barry urges residents to the city’s 3-1-1 line when they discover a pothole in the street.

“Potholes are a menace, but rather than complain about it, if we can get residents to call 3-1-1, report that pothole, we guarantee we can have it repaired within two business days,” Barry said.

According to Public Works, potholes are formed following extremely hot weather and rain. The change in weather causes the expansion and contraction of asphalt.

Barry said if a pothole is not repaired it will continue to expand and create problems in the street.
