SAFD: Fire truck crashes into apartment building after being hit by sedan; 17 residents displaced

Crash occurred around 10:40 p.m. at apartments near Hillcrest and West Quill

SAN ANTONIO – A sedan crashed into a fire truck sending it into an apartment building and displacing nearly 20 residents late Tuesday night, the San Antonio Fire Department said.

The crash occurred around 10:40 p.m. at an apartment complex near the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and West Quill Drive, not far from West Woodlawn Avenue and St. Mary’s University.

According to San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood, firefighters were responding to a fire on Culebra Road when a silver sedan crashed into the back of a fire truck.

The fire truck then crashed into the apartment building, taking out the stairs to a second floor and also damaged a balcony, Chief Hood said.

Fire officials said several residents had to be laddered down from the second floor. No injuries were reported.

“The one occupant that was in the apartment with the most damage -- she, her husband and child had just gone to bed. So you can imagine that if this had been a couple of hours earlier, or someone standing on the corner, we could have had multiple tragedies here tonight,” Hood said.

SAFD said eight units of the apartment and 17 residents in total are now displaced until the structure can be repaired.

The driver of the sedan fled the scene following the crash and has not been found, authorities said. A description of the driver was not released.
