Rackspace customer emails impacted after ransomware breached hosted exchange environment, company says

Company using Microsoft program as workaround to get emails forwarded, help their customers’ business flow

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio-based company Rackspace has confirmed that a piece of ransomware managed to breach its hosted exchange environment.

This means that customer emails, for some, are essentially being held for ransom. It’s an attack that has impacted other South Texas facilities in the past.

The breach happened Friday, and four days later, it is unclear who is behind the ransomware attack or how much the suspects are demanding in the incident.

However, investigators believe the breach is isolated to those emails in the hosted exchange environment.

Officials say it’s still unclear if the suspects could get into any sensitive information.

The blockade on those emails has made business more difficult for some customers.

An IT expert says the email issues go beyond San Antonio.

“Exchange hosted email, which is that particular problem, and it’s a global problem -- not a local problem,” said Richard Coyle.

Rackspace is using a Microsoft program as a workaround to get those emails forwarded and help their customers’ business flow.
