SAPD: 18-year-old shot, killed in parking lot after attending car club meet-up on city’s West Side

Shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. in 8000 block of Meadow Leaf Dr.

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified an 18-year-old who was shot and killed inside a vehicle after attending a car club meetup on the city’s West Side late Sunday night.

Paul Joseph Ortiz was fatally shot around 10:30 p.m. in a parking lot in the 8000 block of Meadow Leaf Drive, not far from both Marbach Road and Loop 410.

According to police, officers had initially broken up a car club meet-up that was happening in a parking lot. That’s when, police say, the vehicles all left the area.

One of the vehicles, however, relocated to Meadow Leaf Drive and that’s where someone approached the car and began a conversation with the front passenger.

SAPD said at some point, a single shot was fired into the backseat at Ortiz, wounding him in the head. The driver immediately drove from the location to an emergency care center, but Ortiz was pronounced dead by emergency staff.

A motive for the shooting is not currently known. Police say there is no information on a suspect.

The San Antonio Police Department and EMS both responded to the call.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
