Quiñones and Salinas answered questions and shared stories from their experience in covering the Robb Elementary School tragedy, where 19 children and two teachers were killed just days before summer break in May 2022.

Gloria and Javier Cazares were in the audience and eventually on the stage. They’re the parents of Jackie, who was killed at 9 years old in her fourth-grade classroom.

The still-grieving parents discussed how they came to trust the ABC News journalists who helped tell their daughter’s story and how their relationship became more like a family.

KSAT 12 News, an affiliate of ABC News, worked alongside the network journalists to share the story of the community in the aftermath of the shooting and for the next year.

The book has a chapter that covers the close relationship between journalists who were bonded by telling this story in a way that would honor the 21 victims and survivors of one of the worst school mass shootings in Texas history.

Following Thursday’s panel, free copies of the “One Year in Uvalde” book were given out and signed by Quiñones and Salinas.

The book is available for presale before its release on May 7, 2024.
