SAN ANTONIO – Two children were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after a pit bull attack at an apartment complex, according to San Antonio police.
The children were attacked around 3 p.m. Saturday inside an apartment complex in the 4200 block of West Commerce Street.
Police said a woman babysitting a 1-year-old girl and a 3-year-old girl was bathing the pit bull before the incident.
When the woman was finished bathing the pit bull, police said it ran into a bedroom where the two girls were inside.
SAPD said the pit bull attacked both girls, causing serious injuries. The 1-year-old girl was bitten on her face above her eye, and the 3-year-old girl suffered wounds to her lip and upper arm area, authorities said.
Animal Care Services took the pit bull away. Police said a dangerous dog investigation is underway.
SAPD said the pit bull will be quarantined pending further investigation.
According to ACS, the owner of the pit bull and the children’s babysitter each face two criminal citations for the attack itself and since the dog did not have its legally required rabies vaccination and microchip.
“This investigation has begun in earnest and the dog is in ACS custody. But it is already very clear: Irresponsible pet care and guardianship are the root cause of tragedies like this and today’s attack was 100% preventable,” said ACS in a statement on Saturday.
