CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The United States Coast Guard stopped four lanchas and seized hundreds of pounds of illegally caught fish and several sharks off the South Texas coast.
Authorities found 11 fishermen illegally fishing north of the Maritime Boundary line on Thursday, according to a press release .
The U.S. Coast Guard seized approximately 1,595 pounds of red snapper and nine sharks from the fishermen, the release stated.
The fishermen were taken into custody and transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials for further processing.
Lanchas are known for transporting illegal drugs or fish near the U.S.-Mexico border. The boats range between 20 and 30 feet long and have a slender profile capable of traveling about 30 miles per hour.
