SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio research institute dedicated to fighting childhood cancer received a $500,000 grant from Hyundai Hope on Wheels.
The Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute, part of the Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, received the grant during a ceremony that brought together researchers, pediatric cancer patients and their families.
The Greehey Institute is one of two research groups focused solely on pediatric cancer research in the nation.
Institute leaders said grants like this help support scientists working in laboratories in San Antonio while also benefiting children and families across the country.
“The more funds that are able to be raised really helps our researchers continue their work,” Dr. Shafqat Shah said. “Science that will lead to cures is happening right now in places like the laboratories in this center, and it’s wonderful to be able to have local people support our work here.”
The institute said the grants will also help find treatments that could improve outcomes for children with cancer and avoid long-term side effects associated with cancer treatments.
As part of the ceremony, children undergoing cancer treatment and their families took part in arts and crafts, decorating a car and researchers’ lab coats with handprints.
