Loud aircraft noise wakes up many on NE Side

Boom heard near San Antonio International Airport around midnight Friday

SAN ANTONIO – Around midnight Friday, many who live near San Antonio International Airport reported hearing an unusual, loud jarring noise.

"A big loud noise like: 'Zoom, zoom, zoom.' Three of them back to back, like, 'Boom, boom, boom,'" described Isabel Salazar.

"I didn't know if it was a bomb or what it was," said Elaine Salazar. "It was terrifying."

Many went to social media to report the incident.

Those who live near San Antonio International Airport are familiar with plane noise, but felt this time the sound was much different.

"This was not normal," said Rudy Trevino.  "It was shaking the windows. The house was shaking."

"Not at all; nothing even remotely close to it," said Sharon Neisen, when asked if she had ever heard anything similar.

Some residents in the area reported seeing several small jets.

San Antonio International Airport officials said they could not be sure, but believed it was likely military activity. Despite being a mainly civilian airport, military aircraft can use the airport at any time.

KSAT also reached out the FAA, but has yet to receive a response. The lack of information about what could have caused the jarring noises is leaving some residents in the area uneasy.

"I understand that I'm by an airport, but if they don't know what's flying in the airspace, I mean, what else is potentially going on above my house," said Neisen.
