SAN ANTONIO – Things are in place for San Antonio's Martin Luther King Jr. Day march Monday morning on the city's East Side.
On the eve of one of the largest marches in the United States, some used song, meditation and prayer at the annual vigil and blessing sponsored by the P.E.A.C.E. Initiative.
The city of San Antonio has set the theme for the 2017 march as "King's legacy for peace is justice for all. Remember! Celebrate! Act!"
"We are a community that takes on this challenge of bettering who we are and what we stand for," P.E.A.C.E. Initiative executive director Patricia Castillo said. "We take it seriously and I think that's why you see the turnout that you do for the MLK march."
Vigil participants put messages of how they can dismantle hatred, fear, ignorance and prejudice on stickers before adding them to the ribbons of the peace pole.
"Mine was to stay open and to use my voice," Jasmine Dennis said.
Many planning on participating in the march believes strength comes in numbers.
"We're reflecting on what awaits us with this new administration and we're preparing and planning and strategizing for what it is we need to do as a community," Castillo said.
Coverage of the MLK Jr. march begins live on Good Morning San Antonio Monday morning. The march starts at 10 a.m. at the MLK Academy in the 3500 block of MLK Drive and end at Pittman-Sullivan Park in the 1100 block of Iowa Street.
