TxDOT studies 85 mph speed limit on Highway 130

SEGUIN, Texas – The Texas Department of Transportation is conducting a study on Highway 130 after a proposal to increase the speed limit to 85 mph.

Drivers can already go 80 miles an hour on Highway 130, which stretches from Seguin to Austin, but officials want to relieve traffic tie ups on Interstate 35 and attract more drivers to the toll road.

Texas law allows 85 mph but it also says TxDOT has to study the road to make sure it's safe. Critics believe higher speed limits lead to more fatal accidents.

A University of Texas-Austin professor says research shows the safest roads are the ones where everyone goes the same speed.
