Smoothies for young athletes, school-shopping questions and a truck month called Trucktober

South San Antonio Buick GMC (2026)

SAN ANTONIO – Today @ 10:30 a.m., SAN ANTONIO FOOD BANK ATHLETE RECIPES

Fueling a kid who plays sports gets expensive fast, and the San Antonio Food Bank used the studio kitchen to show two recipes built around cheap, shelf-stable and frozen ingredients. First up was a blueberry banana smoothie: one ripe banana, fresh or frozen blueberries, plain whole-fat Greek yogurt for the dairy protein, fresh spinach the kids will never spot, peanut butter, a dash of vanilla for sweetness without added sugar, and water to loosen it up. Frozen fruit, the food bank representative said, is easier on a grocery budget and skips the need for ice. The second was an infused water with mint, cucumber and lime, a hydration trick that leans on the water already in produce.

The conversation turned to who this food reaches. One in four children in Bexar County faces hunger to some degree, the food bank said, and that includes student athletes. The organization’s chef program teaches children, adults and seniors about food and health, using the same produce and pantry staples the food bank distributes. A dollar equals seven meals; peanut butter sits on the food bank’s list of 12 most wanted items. More information is at safoodbank.org, and KSAT Community is hosting a Hunger Action Month food drive on September 29 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

NOVATIO SCHOOL ENROLLMENT OPTIONS

Sponsored by Novatio School, this segment dealt with how Texas families are sorting through a suddenly crowded field of school choices under the new education savings program. The head of school described Novatio as a private, virtual, AI-driven, teacher-guided school and said some newer operations have launched quickly without the infrastructure to handle the growth. Her advice to parents was to talk to an actual person at a school rather than trusting a website’s promises, and to ask three things: how much teacher access a student gets, what supports exist for exceptional learners, and how much visibility a parent has into the school day. Accountability matters in a virtual setting, she said, and at Novatio live teachers are with students the whole time. The school piloted in the 2024-25 year, saw roughly 400% growth in its first full-scale year, and families can switch schools at any point during the year under the new program. Details are at novatio.school.

SOUTH SAN ANTONIO BUICK GMC TRUCKTOBER

This one from the lot at South San Antonio Buick GMC, where a marketing specialist walked through the GMC Sierra lineup for Trucktober. The demo truck was a Sierra 1500 Elevation, pitched as the value trim with a gloss black grille and wheels, a 13-inch infotainment screen and wireless Apple and Android connectivity. Moving up the range, the AT4 and AT4X add off-road tires and a couple of inches of lift, while Denali and Denali Ultimate are the road-trip luxury end. GMC’s safety suite comes standard across the trucks, including blind spot alert, pedestrian and cyclist alert, automatic braking and adaptive cruise control; Super Cruise is the hands-free option that can change lanes and pass on its own. Trucktober timing matters because the 2027 models start rolling out while the rebates land on the 2026s. On screen: 0% APR up to 72 months on new GMC Sierra 1500 models, with lease offers mentioned as low as $225 a month. Test drives can be booked at southsanantoniobuickgmc.com or (726) 600-2600.

METHODIST HEALTHCARE HOME FALL PREVENTION

Methodist Healthcare takes a practical look at staying strong and upright at home, tied to National Rehabilitation Awareness Month and Healthy Aging Month. A physical therapist made the case that nobody needs to buy equipment: canned goods and water bottles work as light resistance, seated or standing, and a stable kitchen counter or a sturdy chair covers balance, core and leg work. Sitting down and standing back up, she said, may be the most functional exercise there is.

Nighttime bathroom trips got their own stretch of the conversation, because the risk factors stack: dim light, a cluttered pathway, slippery socks, a cane or walker left out of reach, and the psychological rush that keeps people from sitting on the edge of the bed before standing. Her fixes were motion-activated lights, assistive devices kept beside the bed, non-skid footwear instead of slippery socks, clear pathways and no throw rugs. For anyone living alone, she recommended two things: a reliable way to summon help that is actually within reach, whether a cell phone, a smart watch, a wearable alert pendant or a voice system, and a standing check-in plan with a neighbor, friend or family member. Her one takeaway was to stay strong, stay safe and stay connected. In a fall injury or medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room; Methodist Healthcare ER locations are listed at sahealth.com/er, or by phone at (844) 706-8773.
