A Facebook post from Thompson's wife Michelle confirmed the news.

"After months of not feeling well, Brooks was rushed to the ER and diagnosed with double organ failure. The doctors told us he wouldn’t live past two days! By the Grace of God and 6 days in ICU – Brooks has miraculously made a turn for the better,” Michelle wrote.

Thompson was relieved of his coaching duties on March 10, following 10 seasons at UTSA. He compiled a 133-178 record as head coach.

Thompson led the Roadrunners to the Southland Conference Tournament title and the school's first NCAA Tournament in 2011, where they beat Alabama State in the tournament's "First Four".

Three Roadrunners were named league freshman of the year during his time as coach and eight earned all-conference honors.

Thompson played for Texas A&M and Oklahoma State in college before playing in the NBA with five teams in four seasons.

UTSA hired former University of Oklahoma assistant coach Steve Henson as Thompson's replacement in April.
