SAN ANTONIO – UTSA defensive lineman Johnny Bowens III is looking to have a breakout season in his second year with the Roadrunners.
Bowens, who went to Judson High School, suffered a serious knee injury in the fall of 2024, costing him the entire season. It was the first time he hadn’t played football in his life.
“I didn’t know rehab takes a year,” Bowens said. “When they told me it takes a year, I was like, ‘Whoa!’”
A 4-star recruit out of Judson, Bowens originally went to Oregon, where he played three games as a true freshman for the Ducks.
He entered the transfer portal in April 2024 and announced his commitment to UTSA in July 2024.
Bowens suited up for UTSA in 2025. He played 13 games for the Roadrunners and registered five total tackles, three quarterback hurries and one pass breakup.
But he just wasn’t the same. What was missing from his game?
“Just my twitch,” Bowens said. “My twitch, my power, and I didn’t feel like I was there.”
Bowens says he’s almost there and that he’s just stacking days. The redshirt sophomore says he will do all he can to help the Roadrunners win.
