CPS Energy could soon have a permanent leader as its board of trustees voted to begin negotiations with interim President and CEO Frank Almaraz to take on the role full-time.

CPS Energy interim CEO Frank Almaraz says the utility is evaluating its response to a severe weather event last Friday night that knocked out power to more than 300,000 customers across the San Antonio area.

Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones said she hopes the city can apply for state assistance after Friday’s storms damaged property and initially left as many as 100,000 people without power.

Two days after strong storms rolled through the Alamo City, fewer than 2,000 CPS Energy customers remain without electricity.

According to San Antonio Fire Chief Valerie Frausto, no injuries were reported at an apartment complex that sustained tornado damage Wednesday morning.

CPS Energy announced its interim chief executive officer on Thursday as the utility company searches for a long-term replacement of CEO Rudy Garza.
