Nearly 3,000 USAA employees and volunteers gathered at the company’s San Antonio headquarters to support military families through a series of community service events, including the second annual Gold Star Gamers’ Cup.

It’s an honor that nobody wants, but many here in San Antonio are familiar with — being a Gold Star Family.

Some families this Father’s Day are celebrating the memory and legacy left behind of their fathers, especially families of service members.

Federal lawmakers introduced a bill to create a national holiday, making the last Monday of September the Gold Star Families Act Day. Their definition of what a Gold Star family is has caused some painful division among military families.

American Gold Star Mothers is a national organization of families who find fellowship in one another and strive to keep alive the memory if their children, killed in military action.

A group of Gold Star moms from San Antonio were honored on Thursday's episode of "Live with Kelly and Ryan." Gold Star Mothers is an organization for mothers who have lost a son or daughter in the service of our country. The women were greeted and interviewed by Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest during a segment called the "I in Live" where someone from the audience gets to tell some of their personal story. The women were in New York City on their first Gold Star Moms Getaway to celebrate the legacy of their children who died in service. During the segment, Ripa said the women were "certainly as brave as their sons."
