KFC is starting off 2021 by entering the chicken sandwich wars. Starting Thursday, KFC's sandwich is available in select restaurants in Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Louisville, Kentucky, Sacramento, California, and Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the spring, KFC tested the sandwich in Orlando, Florida, and the item nearly doubled its original sales projections. "Many customers hadn't considered KFC as a part of the chicken sandwich conversation, but anyone who tastes this sandwich will know, without a doubt, that we're playing to win," said Andrea Zahumensky, chief marketing officer of KFC U.S. The sandwich consists of a quarter-pound chicken breast filet that's been double breaded, a toasted brioche bun, pickles and either mayo or spicy sauce.cnbc.com

Yum Brands on Thursday reported that its quarterly revenue rose 8%, fueled by Taco Bell's return to positive same-store sales growth. Same-store sales across Yum fell 2%, but the company's digital sales set a record for a quarter, reaching $4 billion. Taco Bell reported same-store sales growth of 3%. Last quarter, the chain saw its same-store sales fall 8%, hurt by lower demand from early morning and late-night customers. (CNN) -- Dont count out the colonel in the chicken sandwich wars. KFC has begun testing a new, premium chicken sandwich in Orlando, Florida. With the aptly titled "KFC Chicken Sandwich," KFC is testing an extra crispy chicken filet placed on a buttered brioche bun and topped with pickles and spicy or classic mayonnaise. KFC bemoaned that its chicken sandwich wasn't the best, Zahumensky admitted. In addition to the McChicken, it tested out another crispy chicken sandwich with a potato roll in two US cities earlier this year.
Taco Bell owner's same-store sales drop 7% in first three months of year, says trends improving in April
Yum Brands on Wednesday reported that global same-store sales fell 7% in the first three months of the year as the coronavirus pandemic closed thousands of its restaurants and weighed on Pizza Hut and KFC's sales. Excluding China, KFC's quarterly same-store sales fell 2%, hit by store closures and shelter-at-home mandates across the world in March. Pizza Hut, the laggard of Yum's portfolio, reported even steeper same-store sales declines of 11% as sales in the U.S. and China fell. Yum Brands CEO to forgo 2020 salary to fund general manager bonuses
Yum Brands said Monday that CEO David Gibbs will forgo the rest of his base salary in 2020 to fund one-time $1,000 bonuses to the company's nearly 1,200 restaurant general managers across KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and The Habit Burger Grill. His salary will also help fund the Yum Brands Foundation Global Employee Medical Relief Fund, according to a regulatory filing. The fund will provide financial hardship grants to those directly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, including company and franchise restaurant employees. Gibbs stood to make $900,000 from his salary this year, excluding any performance-based bonuses. Among them: Darden Restaurants CEO Gene Lee, who is not taking a salary and The Cheesecake Factory CEO David Overton, who is taking a 20% pay cut.cnbc.com

KFC to sell Beyond Meat's plant-based 'fried chicken' in the southern US

Yum Brands' $375 million acquisition of Habit Restaurants gives the owner of Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut an opportunity to break into the fast-casual industry at a time when fast-food restaurants are struggling. Habit operates Habit Burger Grill, a premium burger chain founded in 1969 with nearly 280 locations, including several in China. While the overall fast-casual industry has seen its traffic growth slow in recent years, it is still outpacing that of fast-food restaurants. Visits to U.S. fast-casual restaurants increased by 3% in the year ended November 2019, according to data from The NPD Group's Crest service. (CNN) - Taco Bell is debuting a vegetarian section on its newly redesigned menu, which also includes two new items. Those are in addition to its two other existing vegetarian options that will be displayed prominently in a new "Vegetarian Favorites" menu. In total, there are more than a dozen vegetarian items on Taco Bell's menu. Taco Bell emphasized that non-vegetarian items can be made vegetarian by substituting beans for meat. Taco Bell said in a release said it plans to "further innovate in this growing space."
US restaurant chains look to China for sales growth as trade war continues
