The founder of TikTok’s Chinese owner is giving up his post as CEO to focus on longer-term initiatives, a step that comes amid uncertainty over whether the Biden administration will force the sale of the popular short video service’s U.S. arm.

The federal lawsuit alleged that TikTok broke the Illinois biometric privacy law, which allows suits against companies that harvest consumer data without consent, including via facial and fingerprint scanning. Illinois is the only state with a law that allows people to seek monetary damages for such unauthorized data collection. “While we disagree with the assertions, rather than go through lengthy litigation, we’d like to focus our efforts on building a safe and joyful experience for the TikTok community,” TikTok said in an emailed statement. Facebook agreed to a $550 million settlement under the same law last February. The TikTok settlement must still be approved by a federal judge.

TikTok has become big competition for Instagram. AdBuilding a clone is easy; creating a vibrant community is not, even for the social media giant. With Reels, Instagram has tried to replicate much of what makes TikTok popular, including editing effects and the ability to add music or a background sound. Instagram reels largely remains a home for TikToks’ greatest hits, with many people reposting popular Tiktok videos with the platform’s trademark watermark to reels. It’s common to scroll through reels videos and see one TikTok video after another.

Cooped-up sailors who felt the same way on long ocean journeys broke up the tedium with work songs called sea shanties. AdPeople began using the feature to record sea shanties, and shantying quickly became a mainstream thing, starting last month. Geoff Kaufman, who made a living singing sea shanties and directed the Sea Music Festival at the Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, said he’s amused and intrigued by the sudden fascination with shanties.

The social media app shared its list of top 100 videos, creators and trends in America in 2020. Starting on Wednesday, the default privacy setting for accounts with users aged 13 to 15 will be private. TikTok is also blocking users' ability to download videos created by those 15 or younger. A feature called TikTok for Younger Users offers pre-selected, “age appropriate" videos. TikTok users are asked to put in their birthday when they sign up for the service, but, as with other social media platforms, there is no real verification to ensure it is accurate.

But analysts are optimistic about TikTok's potential for helping Walmart crack the online shopping nut. Walmart could make TikTok into an extension of its sales machine, helping advertisers, creators and others sell products. TikTok users swiping through and buying as part of their experience on the app might not even know of a Walmart connection. Walmart could also use TikTok to promote key sellers from its online marketplace, which its trying to develop to rival Amazon, said KeyBanc analysts. The lines are blurring between traditional shopping, digital shopping and social media," said UBS analyst Michael Lasser, in a research note.

Microsoft is in talks to buy parts of TikTok, in a potential sale that's being forced under Trump's threat of a ban. Tencents WeChat is a critical communications and payments service in China and with Chinese emigrants abroad, with 1.2 billion users globally. Chinas economic espionage is a well-known threat, and similar user data concerns were raised about Huawei, the telecom equipment maker. If thats the issue, a Microsoft deal would solve the problem.
