This Bug Could Drive Ranchers Out of the Business
Texas ranchers are on edge over a threat they haven't seen this bad since the 1970s — the screwworm. These flies lay their eggs in open wounds of warm-blooded animals, and the maggots literally burrow in, causing serious or deadly damage if not caught in time. A quarantine zone is already in place in La Pryor, and even your pets could be at risk. KSAT's Garrett Brnger spoke with Bryan Luensmann, manager of the 48-year-old Seguin Cattle Company, who lived through the last outbreak as a kid — and says if it gets that bad again, he might walk away from ranching altogether. The USDA is fighting back with sterile fly releases, but the question of how far this could spread — especially through wildlife — remains.
