SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio continues to extend its helping hand to Hurricane Harvey victims, as nearly two dozen organizations and leaders continue to back city efforts to provide for those who have lost everything.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg applauded the generosity of the community, with so many people giving supplies, money or their time to help.
On Wednesday, Nirenberg created the Mayor’s Hurricane Relief Fund to help support the organizations and charities helping hurricane victims now and in the future.
The mayor applauded the dozens of San Antonio corporations which have led the way in putting their money where it is needed.
The USAA Foundation announced it provided $1 million to the Red Cross and the Food Bank. Residents have also made physical contributions to the cause.
“This is what makes SA so special a city, where you can find neighbors helping neighbors. A city rooted in compassion and filled with community servants all working for the greater good,” Nirenberg said.
“We have the opportunity to let this hurricane to define us. Do we choose to act or sit on the sideline? SA is a community that acts,” said Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank.
The city has 1,428 evacuees in its three open shelters. About 70 city first responders have deployed to help in Houston. But leaders say the needs will continue.
Nirenberg said he hopes the newly created fund will stretch out the help to those victims as they rebuild.
