Toyota makes $1.7 million donation to SWISD

Money to be used to build ‘smart classrooms'

SAN ANTONIO – Focusing on the workforce of the future -- that is the message the Toyota USA Foundation sent Monday with a record donation to Southwest Independent School District.

The foundation gave a $1.7 million grant to help create the new Southwest Legacy High School.

The grant will help enhance the smart classrooms and labs with robotics, conveyors and other technologies.

The new high school will be the second Center for Applied Science and Technology (CAST) campus.

Southwest Legacy will have a curriculum that focuses on advanced manufacturing, engineering, global enterprise, logistics and energy and could lead to internships or jobs with companies such as Toyota.

"We're now going to see an explosion of opportunities not only for the students but for their families,” said Mario Lozoya, with Toyota Motor Manufacturing. “It's really proud for me to make that announcement here on the South Side of San Antonio."

The new school will open in August.

Total enrollment at CAST is expected to reach 600 students by 2022.
