Crowds pack theater for Cornyation

Event has 2 more showings Thursday

Crowds packed the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre Wednesday night for another sold-out show of Cornyation.

Organizers said Cornyation is one of Fiesta's most popular events and this year was no different.

"It's a great feeling to have the support of San Antonio," said Ray Chavez, director or Cornyation 2012. "And, for a number of years we have had sellout houses continuously."

Cornyation has been around since the early 1950s and started as a spoof on Fiesta's Coronation, which was also going on Wednesday night at the Majestic Theater around the corner on Houston.

Cornyation 2012 is at the Empire Theater this week and Chavez said the show is hilarious.

This year's show features skits taking jabs at Fiesta, the political season and some celebrities.

Tom McKenzie with Cornyation said whether it's the skits or the costumes that bring the crowds in, all proceeds go to local charities.

"We raise roughly $130,000, which are donated to local charities," said McKenzie. "And, having all the support of the community is really wonderful."

There are two more shows scheduled for Thursday night.

"I've never seen anything like it before," said Jeff Herrera, who lined up to watch the show for the second year in a row. "It's pretty funny. I like the show."
