A 39-year-old man was killed in an apartment fire on the city's South Side.

The two-alarm fire was reported at a complex in the 400 block of Gilmore. Crews responded to the blaze around 4:25 p.m. Thursday.

Fire Chief Charles Hood said flames were going through the roof of a second story apartment when crews arrived.

The man killed in the fire was found during a search and rescue mission. Family members said they went to the store while he was sleeping.

"He was trying to get out. My neighbor said he was trying to get out. He was yelling. The maintenance man came out and he looked and there was nothing he could do," said Jose Baeza, who was displaced due to the fire.

Hood said the fire was put out quickly.

Hood said 10 people were displaced in the fire. SAFD is working with management at the complex to get them relocated. Animal Care Services will take in displaced pets.

The name of the man killed in the fire has not been released.

The arson team is investigating the fire. No other injuries were reported.
