Borders Bookstores Begin To Close

Local Book Retailers Say Closure A Trend In Book Selling

SAN ANTONIO – A national book retailer bids farewell. Borders Book Store is closing and in San Antonio, some customers spent Friday taking advantage of the "going out of business" sales.

"They still have a lot of stuff there," said Alex Ftorski, a customer. "It's all up to 40 percent off. So, it's kind of nice. I just figured I would pick up a few books."

Still, despite the sales and the crowds at the Borders at the Quarry, customers told KSAT they were a little saddened to see the book store go away.

"I've always gone to Borders for books," said Ftorski.

The Borders CEO cited a bad economy and the increase of e-readers for the decline.

Claudia Maceo Sharp, who runs The Twig Book Shop in San Antonio said Friday the announcement of Border's closing seems to be a trend with book selling.

"It seemed inevitable," said Sharp. "So, it wasn't a big surprise, but when it is happening right down the street from you, it's hard."

However, Sharp said she hopes her business will continue to thrive on other strengths, such as book related gifts, local authors and a "Texana" selection.

"I like the idea about looking 10 years down the road and hopefully, we will continue to evolve and we'll say, "Wow, look where book selling has come and I hope to be a part of that."
