Hartman reveals plans for new soccer stadium

SA Scorpions stadium planned for 2013

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio's newest professional sports franchise is getting a new, state-of-the-art home.

On Monday, San Antonio Scorpions owner Gordan Hartman revealed his future home for his North American Soccer League team.

"The ultimate in bringing soccer to San Antonio in the way it should be brought to San Antonio," said Hartman.

"It's so exciting, from a player's perspective," said Kevin Harmse, Scorpions midfielder.

The stadium will be built at the Star Soccer Complex, adjacent to Morgan's Wonderland.

It will initially hold 6,100 fans, but it will be expanded by four times to hold 9,000, then 11,000 and ultimately 18,000 fans.

There will be 16 suites and the west stands will be covered. There will be 34 concessions areas around the stadium.

The field will be the kind of high-quality grass found on golf courses. "The biggest thing for me is the attention to detail. Playing on grass is the big thing always for players," Harmse said.

"This is going to be a project of significance that will impact everyone involved and the entire city, so it's a very exciting moment for the city (and) for the growth of soccer in this country," said Tim Hankinson, Scorpions head coach.

It will not only have a significant impact on the San Antonio soccer community, but also on Morgan's Wonderland.

That is one of the reasons Harmse called it a "unique" situation to come to. "This is about suppoting the special needs community 100 percent. That's what we are doing it for. That's where the real passion, the real desire to ultimatley make this incredibly successful comes from," said Hartman.
