SAN ANTONIO – A woman who was critically injured in a hit and run accident while walking with her son Friday night has died.
The woman, identified by her family as 36-year-old Maria Lankford, was walking home from McDonalds, along Westfall Avenue shortly before 9:00 pm Friday, when a vehicle, described by police as a dark green SUV, left the roadway and hit her.
Lankford was airlifted to University Hospital, but was pronounced dead early Sunday morning.
Lankford's son, Jean Paul, was able to get out of the way in time, and was not injured.
Paul Lankford, Lankford's husband, said Valentine's Day would have been the couple's 21st wedding anniversary.
"She was a good woman. She didn't deserve this to happen to her," Lankford said.
Police are still working to track down the hit-and-run driver. They are looking for a green SUV, possibly a Jeep, with damage to the right front end.
